Bayport Industrial Complex

Bayport Industrial Development is a chemical and chemical specialty complex that includes facilities belonging to more than 70 American and foreign companies. The Bayport Turning Basin was developed by the Port Authority in conjunction with Friendswood Development Corp., a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corporation.

Two privately owned liquid cargo terminals operate for public use at Bayport.

Odfjell Terminals (Houston) LP., owned by Odfjell ASA, a Norwegian company, is a public bulk liquid storage facility with foreign trade zone status. The terminal has a total 1,705,000 barrel capacity in 92 tanks, which includes 275,000 barrels of stainless steel storage. The company operates two 650 ft. ship docks and four barge docks that can handle up to 30,000 barrel barges. The terminal can perform direct transfers through several stainless steel pipeline systems. Other services provided include Marpol removal, de-ionized water, nitrogen, flaring, bunkers via pipeline, and crane services.

At PetroUnited Terminals Inc. 76 storage tanks provide 1,750,000 barrels of storage. The terminal has one ship dock and two barge docks that can handle barges with 25,000 barrel capacity. PetroUnited is served by pipeline.

Both terminals, which handle all types of chemicals, are served by Union Pacific Railroad Co. and truck carriers. Major highways are easily accessible.

Hoechst Celanese Chemical Co. operates a marine terminal for its own use at Bayport.

Texas has no corporate income tax, and raw and intermediate feedstocks are readily available. The chemical complex can produce 90 million gallons of process water a day. A private central waste water treatment plant services all plants at Bayport, and new users are not required to obtain waste permits.

Two companies operate cogeneration facilities, producing power and steam for their own use and selling the excess to other Bayport companies at reduced rates.

The Bayport Ship Channel and Turning Basin are located two hours from open sea.

Location: The Bayport Ship Channel intersects the Houston Ship Channel just north of Marker 75. Project depth of the channel is 38 ft. (11.5 m). The distance from the HSC to the Bayport Turning Basin is approximately three nautical miles. By land, the turning basin is situated on State Highway 146 between Seabrook and La Porte, Texas.

Turning Basin: 1,600 feet (487 m) in diameter, depth of 40 feet (12 m).

Rail Service: Provided by Union Pacific.

Highway Access: State Highway 146 intersects with State Highway 225 about four miles north of the Bayport Turning Basin. State Highway 225 offers easy access to Loop 610 in Houston or Interstate 10 east of Houston.
