Port Authority Recognized as Outstanding TERP Participant from H-GAC Posted on: September 27, 2012

For the fourth year in a row, the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) has singled out the
Port of Houston Authority for its initiatives in reducing air emissions.

This year the Port Authority received the Clean Air Action Leadership Award as the Outstanding
TERP (Texas Emissions Reduction Plan) Participant. The goal of the Clean Air Action Program
is to assist the region in attaining compliance with federal air quality standards for ground-level
ozone pollution, and the champion designation and awards recognize businesses, governments
and other organizations that are taking steps to improve the region’s air quality.

According to Ben Finley, H-GAC Senior Air Quality Planner, the Port Authority received this
award because it is “massively over-producing on TERP and is about a year-and-a-half ahead
of schedule on air emissions reductions.”

Over the past decade, the Port Authority has been awarded $2.2 million in Texas Commission
on Environmental Quality and H-GAC TERP grants for 43 different applications, according to
Ken Gathright, Port Authority Environmental Affairs Senior Compliance Coordinator. By repowering RTG cranes, the M/V Sam Houston, and the Farnsworth fireboat and also replacing yard tractors using the TERP funding, the Port Authority has been able to achieve significant air
emissions reductions.

In 2009, H-GAC singled out the Port Authority for a Clean Air Action Champion Award. In 2010,
the Port Authority earned H-GAC’s Best All-Around Clean Air Leadership Award. In 2011, HGAC
re-recognized the Port Authority along with other companies which have substantially
decreased emissions. H-GAC initiated the Clean Air Action Awards in 2000.
